TRC20 and ERC20 are the two dominant networks for transferring USDT, but they differ significantly in cost and speed. TRC20 runs on the TRON blockchain, which processes approximately 2,000 transactions per second. Fees are typically under $1. ERC20 runs on Ethereum, where gas fees can range from $5 to over $50 during periods of network congestion. For high-frequency USDT users, TRC20 is almost always more economical.
Despite the cost difference, ERC20 maintains advantages in terms of DeFi ecosystem depth. The vast majority of Ethereum-based protocols and decentralized exchanges use ERC20 tokens. If you need to interact with Uniswap, Aave, Compound, or similar Ethereum DeFi platforms, ERC20 USDT is required. TRC20 is better suited for pure transfers between exchanges and wallets where low cost and speed are the priorities.
A common and costly mistake is sending TRC20 USDT to an ERC20 address (or vice versa). Although USDT carries the same ticker symbol across networks, the underlying infrastructure is entirely different. Tokens sent to the wrong network are not recoverable in most cases. Always verify the network label in your exchange or wallet before sending. When in doubt, send a small test transaction first.
