Coinbase does not support TRC20 as of 2026. The platform handles USDT exclusively on the Ethereum (ERC20) network. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood limitations among newer crypto users, and it has led to significant fund losses when people attempt to send TRC20 USDT to Coinbase. The transaction registers on the TRON blockchain but Coinbase never receives the deposit — and recovery is rarely possible.
For US-based users who are onboarded through Coinbase and need TRC20 functionality, the typical workaround is to use Coinbase to acquire another cryptocurrency (such as ETH or BTC), then transfer that to an exchange supporting TRC20 (such as Binance, KuCoin, or Bybit), and finally purchase or swap into TRC20 USDT from there. This path adds steps but avoids the irreversible loss that comes from sending directly.
If you need to send USDT to someone who is on a TRC20-compatible platform and you only have Coinbase, convert to a network-agnostic asset first. Alternatively, platforms like Kraken and OKX support TRC20 and are available in many of the same regions as Coinbase. Always verify which USDT network your recipient's exchange supports before initiating any transfer.
